It looked like any normal day in the Tracheostomy Change clinic. After the change of tracheostomy tube to one of the patients on portable ventilator machine, the patient started to deteriorate minutes after, due to a sudden malfunction of the ventilator.
Nurse Kathrina was on duty and as an extraordinary nurse she is, diligently took the initiative to support the patient while communicating with the Respiratory Therapist for resolution of the problem. She handled it in a very professional way to safeguard the wellbeing of the patient. During all the assistance process, she had stayed with the patient, including after working hours. She continuously communicated with the family, reassuring the patient's condition during a stressful and difficult situation. She maintained her assertiveness also guiding all members of the team throughout the process. Kathrina has only left the patient when was transferred to the Emergency Department for further management.
The care she provided was above and beyond, she was a great resource for the patient's immediate care and comforting the family throughout constant information on the patient status. This is truly an extraordinary action from a colleague who demonstrated sincere and heartfelt care.
