Tonight, Sarah took the time (and patience) to assist me with a port insertion in the department, something that is one of the skills which had given me fairly strong feelings of anxiety, due to a recent history of port complications I've experienced (A twisted port, broken port tubing, etc). One of my main personal development goals from my 3-month intake review, when I was hired, was to gain greater confidence and comfort with this procedure. On this occurrence, with only a few minutes left in her shift, Sarah was patient, understanding and supportive. Sarah immediately agreed to help me with the procedure, accompanying me to the room with the patient, and being able to assist with the hold with the parents. With her support, the procedure was not only successful but also helped me gain a significant amount of comfort and confidence with the procedure, as well as further clinical confidence. To make the situation even better; the parents were exceptionally grateful with how well the insertion went, having the port being inserted only recently, and this being their first experience with the port being accessed in the ED.
Thank you, Sarah! I mean it from the bottom of my heart. You're an amazing nurse; smart, level-headed, and not afraid to advocate for your patient/the team members you work with. I'm always stoked to be at work when I see your name on the shift roster. You always are so kind, helpful, and supportive of the other nurses on our team and I wanted to recognize that. One of the main draws to me at Sick Kids is the constant room to both develop as a nurse in terms of skills and assessments, but also in terms of my own clinical knowledge and comfort. Tonight, you reminded me that I made the right choice becoming a member of this ED team. I love the constant learning and various day to day challenges of the ED and the ability to gain more knowledge while having a 'buddy' to rely on. Without your support this evening, I imagine that going into the room alone to perform this procedure would have been much more 'scary.' So Thank you once again.
