My husband was a patient at EMMC. We were delivered to the EMMC Emergency Room by ambulance with the capable, kind, and very prompt assistance of the EMT's of the Howland Ambulance. In the ER, he was well cared for. My husband was set up for observation and transported to the Short Stay Unit where a nurse and the exceptionally kind and thoughtful CNA settled us in. Residents took over observation and further evaluation.
The Short Stay Unit seemed exceptionally busy overnight. In the morning we were met with the cheerful smile and bubbly personality of CNA, M, and when nurse Raven began her shift, she took the time to introduce herself. It was clear in an instant that we had met an extraordinarily empathetic, insightful, and caring nurse. It was clear she was an excellent communicator and throughout that day she addressed the work of the Unit with dispatch, diplomacy, humor, and diligence.
With many arrivals and departures, scheduled tests and transports, her ability to direct staff, attend to details, and care for her charges was outstanding. Visitors got the same quality attention. Finding the expanse of the hospital daunting, I asked at the Unit desk for directions to the cafeteria. Nurse Raven personally walked with me to the Unit exit, pointing out the landmarks and directing me to the correct elevators and floor. That she took the time to do that was extraordinary.
At the end of the day, distressed at the reality of driving the long dark distance home, the encouragement and reassurance she provided were straightforward and encouraging. And as we were preparing to depart, my husband's heart monitor which had been silent throughout the night and day, set off the alarms. Immediately inquiring and noting his condition, nurse Raven forwarded details to the attending doctor and explained the need to wait until the report was assessed.
When the 'all clear' came through, she was there in a moment to provide our final instructions and information and to wish us well. The hospital is a big, busy place. Our short visit was a big deal for us, yet we were among the most fortunate of those served, able to leave in a day. In the hubbub and detail of such a big busy place, it's easy to lose sight of the people served. To handle it all with grace and aplomb, patience, efficiency, and effectiveness, takes skill. To do that with sincerity and a smile is the greatest of gifts.
