Samantha (Sam) Smith returned from a leave of absence during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic. Sam was assigned to the front desk at Luckow. Her initial assignment was to screen patients for COVID-19 exposure. As the crisis intensified, Sam was part of the fabric that developed the current screening process in place at Luckow Pavilion. Over the past 3 months, we have implemented a number of new protocols including but not limited to temperature checks, Sam has skillfully adapted to all the changes during such a critical time. She is empathetic and quick to identify a clinical change in a patient whom she has been in contact with in the past. As patients have started to complete their treatment, it is not unusual for them to bring thank you cards and pastries/cookies to show their appreciation. Several patients have shared that Sam's attitude was critical in getting them through treatment during such a highly stressful time. It has been quite rewarding to witness Sam's compassionate spirit and desire to serve.
