I knew we had made the right choice for this baby and family when I saw Edlin approach his care with brave compassion and thoughtful respect.
Edlin exemplifies nursing excellence, providing clinically expert nursing care for premature infants, and respectful family support. He often volunteers to care for the smallest NICU babies who require complex care and frequently have very long hospital stays.
Edlin is often recognized by families for the care he provides. Here are several of their comments:
"We received excellent care - the baby and me and my husband. Our experience was invaluable. So much support."
"Edlin was part of a team of nurses who did an excellent job."
"Edlin Nguyen was great - so mellow and laid back."
"You could tell that he really liked our baby. He would always answer our questions."
Not every NICU story has a happy ending. Recently, one of our smallest patients was extremely ill. Edlin was assigned to care for this infant and family. He was able to provide this hope stricken family with the support needed to face another hard night with their baby. This is not the part of our job that we enjoy or look forward to doing, but we all accept that it is exactly where we are most needed sometimes. I knew we had made the right choice for this baby and family when I saw Edlin approach his care with brave compassion and thoughtful respect. This family had lost a previous preemie and was preparing themselves to say goodbye to this child, as well. I watched as Edlin asked them what support they needed and protected them from any undue discomfort or stress while providing them the support he could. He refused a break because he feared that another nurse entering the room at such an emotional time for the family would be too much for them. As much as he needed to take a break himself, he put their needs first, just as I have seen him do on numerous occasions.
Edlin is a father himself of a NICU graduate and understands like many do not the emotional toll the NICU can take on families.
Edlin embodies excellence in compassionate, respectful clinical care in a patient and family-centered manner. We are so fortunate to have him on our team and are delighted to present him with the DAISY Award. Congratulations, Edlin!
