The DAISY Award is described as an award given to nurses who exhibit both clinical skills and compassionate care. Over the course of my (albeit short) medical career, I can wholeheartedly say I have never worked with a nurse who more exemplified these qualities on a daily basis than Christine. While there are many situations that I could use to illustrate her worthiness, there is one incident that sticks out to me the most. During my month rotating through the Medical ICU, she was given the very hard task of caring for a patient who suffered a devastating brain injury. In addition to the patient being clinically unstable, it was also an emotionally demanding case due to the fact that the patient was in his 20's and the injury was entirely unexpected. over the course of several nights, Christine showed incredible clinical skill and physiologic understanding of the situation, constantly staying on top of the patient's status and remaining one step ahead. She remained calm the entire time, showing extreme poise while under immense stress. Perhaps more apparently, she showed not only a natural talent for interpersonal communication but furthermore a desire to create a trusting and caring relationship with the patient's family. She would consistently go above and beyond to comfort and educate the family throughout the hospitalization. Many times I witnessed family members go from being frantically stressed to being peaceful and calm simply due to the compassionate conversations that she took the time to have. This combination of clinical skill and true compassion was displayed over several nights. As stated above, this was just one of the many instances that illustrate both the advanced skill set that she possesses and the type of person that she is. Christine is a true DAISY Nurse.
