Lucy used this information to provide the best care possible in this patient's unique situation.
Lucy Croome goes above and beyond for patient care. A patient came to the unit with no medical needs, but he continued to use his call light and verbally threaten staff. Lucy never gave up on connecting with the patient in an effort to enhance his care.
One day, Lucy decided to bring the patient out to the nurse's station. This was a turning point for his care. He appeared more relaxed when he was surrounded by staff rather than sitting alone in his room. He began to open up to the staff, and in turn shared stories of his home country, which brought him great peace and joy. Lucy used this information to provide the best care possible in this patient's unique situation. She played traditional music from the patient's home country and took him to our emergency department lobby to see the fish in the aquarium.
On sunny days, Lucy took him to our rooftop garden, which the patient said reminded him of the warmth of his home country. After this, the patient would call the staff into his room to thank them for their care. The patient was able to sleep through the night. As a result of this patient's changing attitude, staff became encouraged with the progress and were reminded of the importance of providing exceptional patient care. Lucy's dedication to the patient, (and all patients), is an inspiration to us all.
