I always felt Melody was listening to what I was saying in order to better know who I was and how being there affected me in order to give the best care possible.
I was admitted to South County Hospital for a recurring issue until I was discharged after surgery. I returned for follow-up surgery a month later. Both times I was in the Frost 3 unit again where I have been many times over the last 10 years - so many times that a few nurses know me by first name. During those past admissions, I have been cared for by many nurses of Frost 3.
Melody was a nurse I had never met before. If any person should be in the field of Nursing, it is Melody. Every time I was her patient, I was treated as if I was the only patient she had--always professionally focused, compassionate and caring. During conversations with me, I always felt Melody was listening to what I was saying in order to better know who I was and how being there affected me in order to give the best care possible. I know she had several other patients every time, but I never felt she rushed or that anything other than my needs and care was exclusively being focused on whether she was in the room or not. Melody was extremely gracious and caring with my family that visited in a way that put them at ease.
During the first stay, in a conversation I had with Melody, we discovered we shared the enjoyment of a good cup of coffee and yes, green Jello, as well. Melody would, without me asking, just bring a fresh cup in the evening at times and a Jello, if I could have it. Some may think that is a small thing, but I was so appreciative of the thoughtfulness she showed. Another act of thoughtfulness Melody repeatedly did was to stop by the room on her way home to say she was leaving then and wish me well. I'm sure Melody was ready to go after a long shift, but still demonstrating caring for her patient even when on her own time. I know if I had asked for anything, it would have been done before leaving. Those two thoughtful actions I will always remember.
The follow-up surgery was early in the morning. Due to lack of a room, I was in several recovery areas for an extra-long time, not coming up to the room until after 5:00 PM. At that point, I was frustrated, tired, and dealing with the pain from the surgery. As Transport entered Frost 3, I saw Melody coming toward us with that smile that would make anyone feel better. When Melody told me that I would be her patient that night a feeling of calm and peacefulness immediately came over me. I knew I was in the hands of a truly professional healer who cared about me as a person rather than just a patient.
I wish Melody a long career of healing with her caring, professionalism, and compassion. The patients she will touch in the future will benefit from her efforts.
Thank you, Melody, for all the care, compassion, and thoughtfulness you demonstrated to me every day that I was a patient in your care. You are a true DAISY Nurse.
