My sister and I live in another state and took the first flight to get to North Carolina to see our father. Nicole spoke with me on the telephone and kept me updated during our travel. She also let our father know that we were on our way there. Once my sister and I arrived, Nicole was very helpful and assisted us with housing arrangements.
Throughout my father's stay, Nicole was always very thoughtful and caring of my father's comfort, keeping my sister and me informed of his condition. She always told him what she was going to do. Even while he was asleep, she spoke with sincere thoughtfulness and kindness. When my father wanted to see the mountains, Nicole did her best to accommodate him. If he was (or even looked) uncomfortable, she always went out of her way to try to make him look and feel as comfortable as possible.
Once the decision was made to put our father on comfort care, Nicole was efficient, gentle and quickly provided him with everything to make this possible. She comforted both of us and told us that we were giving him a gift. These words were the only words spoken, although to my sister and me, they were exactly what we needed. When she went with us to move him to another room, she made sure that he had a view of the mountains. She told him "you now have a beautiful view of the mountains and are comfortable". She gave my sister and me a hug and again spoke words of kindness and comfort.
Unfortunately, my father passed away within a couple of hours of being moved. Seeing that this was all unexpected and emotionally exhausting, we were completely heart broken and now had the task of carrying out his wishes and taking care of his estate. We left the hospital in tears.
Nicole is a DAISY Nurse because her kindness and gentle touch made this very tragic loss to our family something that wasn't absolutely horrible. Yes, she was doing her job, but she also did so much more than what is required of her position. We know that our father was provided the very best care and was in good hands with Nicole. She truly cares about her patients and their family. I will always be grateful for her and believe that she deserves an award for her outstanding service provided and having a heart that is full of kindness.
