I was called as a Psych Resource Team to 8 Main to assist with an upset patient who is well known to the PMU nursing staff. I told Matt that I was leaving the unit to help 8 Main and he offered to help since he knew the patient really well. When we arrived on 8 Main, the patient was upset, paranoid, and very delusional in his thoughts. The patient instantly recognized Matt and began to talk to him. Matt started out by asking what had made him so upset. This patient responded to Matt. The other nurses were not able to connect with this patient, which led to some miscommunication. This patient had not slept or rested in days. Matt sat in the patient's room and empathized with him. Limits were set and a contract was developed to keep both the patient safe and the stafffeeling safe. Matt was able to connect with the patient, getting him to take his medications as prescribed. This intervention was successful and the patient was able to rest and relax in his room, which is important for this patient's healing.
I believe Matt is an empathetic, caring and compassionate nurse. He is sincere in his care for his patients, especially those living with mental illness. He is free from judgment and he seeks to understand. Matt had connected with this patient in a caring and therapeutic manner when no one else was able to be there for him. Matt does an awesome job.

I was in charge one night and my unit was caring for a patient who was manic. This patient kept running down the stairs trying to escape, trying to elope. I called the PRT and asked for some help. I learned that Matt had good rapport this patient. Matt left his busy 7 patient assignment (in thegood and capable hands of his colleagues) several times this night to help calm this patient down. Matt spent over an hour with this patient. If it were not for Matt and his gifts, talents, time, and compassion, this patient would not have come back to 8 Main, the patient would have escaped and eloped. Matt was able to provide excellent nursing care and encouraged this patient to take the necessary prn medications. This patient only trusted Matt. Matt was so patient and kind. He remained calmduring all of this chaos. 8 Main could not have handled this situation without Matt. Thank you so much, Matt.

We worked on noise reduction in the PMU. This is a goal because we believe patients need sound sleep in order to promote physical and mental health. Our UBC has implemented a number of strategies to help meet this goal. Matt is an active member on UBC. He worked really hard on a project we call our "Hush Puppy Award". He came up with criteria to win this award. And he expertly built, with his own two hands, an amazing dog house structure to place the nominations for the award and to store the snacks and treats that are given to the winner. What is especially impressive about Matt is he doeswork without complaint. He is creative and goes above any expectations. He is humble about his work.

Matt was caring for a patient who had significant cognitive impairment. She was nonverbal and tended to be physically assaultive without provocation. Pulling hair was her thing, her way to communicate. Matt was assigned to care for her often because of his ability to connect with patients in a calming and therapeutic manner(and it probably doesn't hurt that he is bald).Matt spent night after night with her, sitting crossed-legged on the floor of her room, reading her book after endless book. He cared for her in a way that is consistent with how he cares for people, expertly picking up on subtle clues during his astute assessments which he uses to guide his nursing interventions. He will not be getting an articulate "thank you" card from this patient; he will not be getting verbal validation or even a smile from her. Despite this, he provides exceptional care anyway.
