I ended up delivering my first child by c-section a few years ago. Going into my second pregnancy, the only reason I was considering a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), was because I felt like I missed out on the skin to skin close bonding with my baby when going through a c-section. So, my doctor recommended I talk to my nurse during my delivery and I ultimately decided on another c-section. Somehow, I was blessed the day of my c-section to have Theresa as my nurse. I told her my story and my wish to spend as much time with my new baby as possible. I never imagined she would do what she did! After Oliver came out, Theresa cleaned him up and took his vitals, and then proceeded to ask the doctors, anesthesiologist, and others if she could place Oliver skin to skin on me. Everyone gave the green light, so I got to hold my baby the whole time for the rest of my surgery. She completely advocated for me and showed true innovation to deliver on my wishes! She touched my life in a way I will never forget and I'm so thankful for her care. Because of her, I feel my recovery and bonding with my baby was much better!
