A patient's parents wrote a letter about Amy to our unit. In the letter, the parents take care to thank the person that had purchased clothing for their son in their absence. They also go on to say, "We just can't express enough our thanks for your wonderful care and kindness. We have not worried at all about his welfare because we knew he was getting the best care possible. Everyone has been so helpful, patient, supportive, and friendly!"
While these kind words were written to every person that has provided such wonderful care and kindness to this patient, the level of support and advocacy that Amy has shown to this patient is what stands out for me.
Not only is Amy the one that bought clothes for this patient in order to make him feel more comfortable, but she recognized a cognitive and social decline that occurred over a period of time. She acted as his advocate to get him the help that he needed to begin advancing his healing again.
Amy also helped identify a knowledge gap with the 1:1 sitters that care for our TBI patients. She worked with Destiny (OT) to implement a tool that will help our sitters (and other caregivers) to better understand the stages of TBI and how to care for them in order to promote a higher level of healing.
