My father was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer and underwent multiple surgeries and treatments. From the first moment to his last breath, he received extraordinary care from the Baptist Medical Center staff. From the team of oncologists, cardiologists, and internists who walked us through all available treatment options to the helicopter crew that transported him from BMC Nassau to BMC Downtown who cracked jokes with him and reassured my family, to the dietary techs that brought up his meals, every member of the Baptist Health team was kind, patient, and most of all generous with their time.
I wanted to share special thanks to a nurse in the Cardiac Care Unit, Nathan Heathcoat. Nate not only provided exceptional medical care to my father, easing his physical pain and distress, he also talked with my father. He got to know him and joked with him, even as we were making the decision to stop treatment. It was during one of the conversations between Nate and my dad that my father mentioned that he'd really like a ham and tomato sandwich. A few minutes after Nate introduced the incoming nurse, a Jimmy Johns sandwich was delivered. Nate had ordered the ham and tomato sandwich, extra mayo, exactly the way my dad loved it and had it delivered to his room. I know it doesn't seem like a big deal in the grand scheme of things. But, this simple act of kindness, a ham and tomato sandwich, is an example of the exemplary level of care this young man gives to his patients. Nate truly understands that each patient is a real person, with a real family, and real feelings.
I count myself fortunate to have been able to hold my dad's hand as he passed from this world to the next. But, I am especially thankful for the care of your staff, especially Nate, during the hardest moment of my life thus far. Thank you for creating an environment where compassion is valued.
