My dad had a medical emergency and found himself being transported to Bergan Mercy for emergency surgery. Due to complications encountered after surgery, he was transferred from HVI to ICU. During our brief stay, prior to his passing, our family had the opportunity to meet many doctors and nurses, all of whom were very personable, professional, and supportive. There was, however, a nurse who left an everlasting mark on our minds and hearts... Her name is Anna Raines. Even though he was sedated, Anna spoke to my dad almost as if he was her own family member. She kept us informed as to everything that she was doing, any change in condition, and any change in treatment. Anna would answer any question we had, no matter how silly or serious. My dad had a huge sense of humor, as does much of our family. One thing my family and I took into account when deciding when to compassionately extubate my dad was timing it so Anna was involved. Her explanation of the process, what to expect, and details regarding organ donation when asked, were so sincere and caring. I know that each patient takes a bit of each nurse's heart with them. I am grateful that Anna has such a big heart to give. Whether Anna knows it or not, she is an angel in scrubs (even though she's a Husker fan. haha). Thank you for your care of our dad/husband/grandpa to the very end.
Note: This is Anna's 2nd DAISY Award!
