This summer, a patient with terminal cancer was able to fulfill a lifelong dream of marrying the love of her life. This was made possible by the keen assessment skills and emotional intelligence possessed by her primary nurse as well as the collaboration of many caregivers including other staff members on the unit, Nurse Manager, Clinical Leader, Nurse Educator, Pain & Palliative Care Advanced Practice Provider, Food & Nutrition Services, Gift Shop, Marketing, Spiritual Care, Harpist, Administration and many others from the family, friends and acquaintances.
As the proverb goes, "It takes a village," and indeed it did that day. But in less than 24 hours, the bride and groom were able to wed in a style befitting of royalty. What struck me most was the compassion, caring, and attention to detail that made this dream come true. And the effort made by what some might argue was "over the top" truly characterizes what we at St. Joe's are all about, teamwork and love, for each other and the community we serve. As a leader, I cannot recall a prouder, more fulfilling moment in my career and a re-affirmation of what I know to be true: Our team rocks!
God bless each and every one of them who made a dream come true. These silent heroes whom I will cherish forever for they helped me to remember what's truly important, love and joy in the work.
Unfortunately, the patient passed away just 9 days after her wedding. However, as Peg Nelson reminds us, "Love never dies, and with love, anything is possible".
