Michelle has very strong critical thinking skills, and is also very technically savvy; two necessary competencies for being an efficient and accurate triage nurse. Michelle spoke with a patient that called about "feeling jittery". The patient had vomited once, was feeling cold and slightly dizzy. The patient also let Michelle know that she had a medical history that included a stroke. Although the patient's current symptoms weren't entirely consistent with a stroke, Michelle recommended the patient be seen immediately, which she was. The patient called back to say thank you. The day after she had called Michelle, "she (the patient) woke up in the hospital with the doctor telling her she is lucky to be alive so she wanted to say thank you to the nurse for sending her to the ER!" Michelle's quick thinking and direction to this patient helped her to get the necessary and timely care that was needed, to save her quality of life.
