N was to go home around 3:20 PM but went into total panic mode when he realized the needle in his port was coming out. We do this every week, but he still has not gotten used to this. This time he got himself so worked up he was not only screaming and crying, but turning red, warm, blotchy, and gagging. We had to wait about 45 minutes to calm him down. When the two nurses came in, he told nurse M he hated her because she was going to hurt him and continued to cry even though Bryce was in there to help. N adores Bryce, but just had himself too worked up to calm down. We took the butterfly off his chest and as Bryce was leaving N cried out, "Mr. Bryce, I love you," in which Bryce told him he loved him too.
Bryce was the other nurse we had during those first 8 days of being diagnosed. He was my textbook and N's punching bag. He explained the physiology of anything and everything coming our way and showed me how to calculate N's ANC. He explained the port and different chemo's to me and dealt with our first fever that week. Baby Hulk would yell, scream, and try and throw Bryce out of the room soon as Bryce walked in. Bryce never got annoyed and just kept trying to connect with N. It worked because N just lights up around Bryce. He too should be assigned all the newly diagnosed patients. He can handle all the chaos and emotions that come along with being a newly diagnosed family.
