On my first visit to the breast center after a mammogram and ultrasound, I was to make an appointment for a biopsy. Everything happened quick. But I was sent home to be called with further instructions. On that same day, I was called by Barb Lamb with calm detailed instructions on what was going to happen to me in my next visit for the biopsy. It was going to be Barb's day off. She talked clearly and calmly and told me everything that was going to happen. I was very scared. She said I could call at any time. I felt like I was a friend, not just a number or client.
Then a couple of weeks later after thebiopsy confirmed early stage cancer, I was to get a lumpectomy. More fast-moving appointments that brought me back to the breast center for surgery. Calls were made to me by nurses and schedulers on my next move. I didn't understand where I was going or if I had two appointments for the same procedures. I called for three days and did not get a human. Then a nurse called. It was Barb. She was confirming the appointment I had before my surgery. Not only did she explain that, but she also called the place where I was to get the injection the day before just to confirm the correct time. She called me back within five minutes. Whereas it took me three days! I did not realize I would be actually in that same office as the mammogram. Once again she talked calmly and reassuringly and gave details on what was going to happen. I was somewhat relieved.
On the day of my surgery, I went into south clinical building very scared. My first procedure was to get two guide wires in before the actual surgery. Back up to the original office; which was a surprise. I was even more surprised to see the woman I had spoken to on the phone only three times: Barb Lamb. She was in the room when I was getting the guide wires put in. I was confused. What was the woman doing in here that was on the phone? She did it all! She held my hand and talked to me while this god awful machine squished my boob down so they could get a good picture. She stepped away when it took the picture. My eyes were closed but Barb reached for my hand and said she was back. Reassuring me the whole time that I was doing good.
She took me to the waiting room and answered all my questions. She explained everything. I'm not sure what her exact role or credentials are there but I feel she is an exceptional human being doing an exceptional job! Thank you.
Note: This is Barbara's 2nd DAISY Award!
