At St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital – Oakland Center, Lisa Turner, RN on 5 Tower was honored with a DAISY Award. Lisa was nominated by a co-worker who told us, “One day recently while doing rounds I overheard Lisa talking with a patient regarding her medications. The patient was elderly, there were many medications. Lisa took the time to explain both generic and patent names, the dosages, when she should take them, how they might make her feel, what the meds were for, and whether she should take them with food or not. I know that nurses are supposed to do this, but it was the manner, unhurried, sitting by the bedside, encouraging questions. The patient was so thankful. I stopped by later to say hello and mentioned that I had seen the nurse explaining her medications. The patient told me no one, not even her physician, had ever taken the time to help her understand her medications, how they help, or their importance to her illness. This is one observation that I’m writing about, but I observe this behavior with Lisa all of the time. She truly exemplifies the spirit of nursing.”
