Brenda goes above and beyond to educate staff and patients regarding their wound-care needs. A few weeks ago, I had a patient with a new colostomy placement. The surgery actually was emergent on her 50th birthday. She was very depressed. Brenda came to her bedside and sat with her for over an hour going over her new colostomy. She got her to look at it and taught her how to take care of it. I think it meant the world to this patient to have someone just sit down with her and talk with her about what to anticipate.

There was also another experience that I had with Brenda a few weeks before that. I had a patient who had multiple wounds. She had a very invasive decubitus and also a leaking urostomy tube. Brenda had come in mid-afternoon to assess this patient’s wounds but she was having multiple procedures and tests done at her bedside and Brenda was unable to get in to assess her. Brenda waited approximately three hours patiently before she could get in to examine her. She then spent over an hour at the bedside addressing all of this patients wound care issues. She took time out to educate staff about the treatment plan 1:1. Most of all she never lost her positive attitude of having to stay late to see to this patient’s needs, however great they were. After she finished with this particular patient she let me know she wasn't done and wanted to follow up on "a couple " of other patients upstairs. Little did I know until later was that Brenda was supposed to leave on vacation earlier in the day. She could have easily turfed this off to another wound care nurse or given the RNs verbal directions on how to care for this patient. She didn't. This patient got the upmost care and respect from her.
