My 67 year old father recently had his second heart bypass and was hospitalized at Baptist DeSoto in ICU for five days prior to the operation to discontinue the blood thinner he was taking. He was under the care of MS Johnson. We fell in love with her wit and personality, but also her compassion and over-the -top care for my father.
My husband and I live in Tupelo, MS and I had driven early one morning prior to Dad’s surgery to spend some time with him. The previous weekend, you see, we lost our 20 year old son in an automobile accident; and this was my first drive since we buried our precious boy. I am generally a very “sleepy” driver and this has always worried my Dad especially.
As the day neared an end and I grew very fatigued, I announced that I was about to leave as it was nearing dark. I had plugged in my phone in Dad’s room in hopes that it would have time to charge before I left because I did not own a car charger for it. Apparently, Paulette put all things together and figured out that I was charging my phone for that reason and that my Dad was concerned…. but never let on that she and another sweet nurse, Glenda Lou Brooks were up to something. As I was kissing my Dad and gathering my things, these two sweet ladies had somehow purchased a car charger for my cell phone so that I could be sure to get home with cell service. I was overwhelmed and quite humbled at this unbelievable act of kindness!
You see, I am a registered nurse, as well, and I know “above and beyond” when I see it displayed. When my Dad was moved from ICU to surgery, these same sweet nurses, Paulette and Glenda Lou, brought him a cross with a beautiful scripture on it to lift his spirits.
A few days later, as my Dad was lying in the other side of ICU (post-CABG) and my Mom and sister had stayed the night in the waiting room; Paulette stopped on her way to work and picked up breakfast for them on her way in.
Baptist DeSoto is blessed to have this fantastic kind of over-the-top special angels on staff. I came back to Tupelo singing the praises of the entire hospital at Baptist DeSoto and especially those two, Paulette & Glenda Lou, who this family will never, ever forget.
Thanks, Baptist!!
