A wise person once told me, “Be careful looking down on those below you because the people on the bottom are probably the ones holding you up.” The Laboratory being sight unseen mostly tends to go unnoticed unfortunately until things go awry. Let me tell a story of an amazing nurse who went completely out of her way to help a department in dire straits.
Ann Black was the SSC on duty the night of December 18th, 2011 on Telemetry Longs Peak. The lab in an unfortunate case was severely short handed at a time (our “morning run”) where we are by far the most busy at any point during the day. Due to this lack of personnel there would be a possibility of severe impact to collections and turn around times for patient’s lab work. We put the call into Ann to ask if it was not a problem to start our A.M. labs early on her floor in order to alleviate the impact to the patients. Not only was Ann okay with this request, she went completely above and beyond knowing that this was a busy time for herself as well (and with shift change coming up soon), she took it upon herself to begin helping the lab collect the blood samples on patients!
Words cannot express how helpful this was to us and the pressure it relieved from our staff that morning. Ann’s actions exemplified the meaning of teamwork and self-sacrifice for the better good of those around her. Not only did her actions contribute to the good of our team here at Exempla, they were indispensable in providing the best possible care for not one or two patients, but every patient under her charge on that floor that morning. I hope Ann’s actions set an example for what one person can do to make a difference to so many. She is truly amazing and more than deserving of your consideration to be the recipient of the next DAISY award!

We had a patient on a Heparin Drip and the nurses and physician were having a hard time figuring out the protocol and guidelines. Ann was so nice she came down in the middle of her shift and helped both the physician and myself with the Epic flowsheet we needed. Ann was so helpful and nice that we would have never figured it out without her!
