Leigh was faced with a challenge that she handled with both clinical competence and unbelievable compassion. I was told by one of the doctors that he needed an AMA form for a patient. Leigh was just taking over from another nurse for lunch relief. This patient had been advised that he needed emergent surgery. He was terrified! The patient lacked the ability to grasp the gravity of his condition and was going to sign out AMA. Luckily, Leigh took over his care, and patiently and compassionately she was able to convey to the man that it was truly an emergency that required immediate attention. She, with the patient's permission, called his daughter who became involved and the patient agreed to surgery. Leigh went the extra mile by listening, educating, and providing compassionate care.
