Jamie is a relatively new RN. One of our veterans with end-stage cancer was uncomfortable and actively dying. No family was around and the Veteran was anxious. Jamie worked with other unit staff to make sure that veteran did not die alone. She stayed by his bedside, on her own for over 2 hours until he breathed his last breath. Jamie showed much compassion, love, caring, concern and was very unassuming about her contributions. She helped to meet or exceed the veteran's needs and helped staff stay calm, composed, and feel united as they help with a dignified death. Though expected, the death was sudden and somewhat turbulent. Jamie played a key role in facilitating a good closure.
The veteran's daughter arrived after the death and was devastated. Jamie, along with other staff consoled the next of kin with tender love and unconditional hospitality. Jamie was patient, tearful, and visibly shaken - but she stayed strong for the sake of the team. Jamie is a treasure and a role model.
