I would like to nominate Alissa Walker from the MICU as a deserving recipient of The DAISY Award. This nurse’s clinical skill and specially her compassionate care exemplify the kind of nurse that our patients, their families, and our staff recognize as an outstanding role model. She consistently meets all of the following criteria
Demonstrates professionalism in the work environment.
Job performance exemplifies the mission, values, and philosophy of AIMMC.
Consistent focus on patient and family centered care to meet patient and family needs.
Collaborates with healthcare team to provide continuity of care and meet patient needs.
Uses critical thinking skills in the delivery of extraordinary patient care.
Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills with peers and co-workers.
Models empathy and demonstrates a caring attitude in all situations.
Is an excellent educator of patients and families.
Please tell your story involving the nurse you are nominating to clearly demonstrate how she meets the criteria for The DAISY Award:
Alissa is an exceptional ICU nurse that always gives 100% to the patients and families in the MICU, even when she is not assigned to their care. Recently, Alissa went out of her way to assist the family members of a deceased patient. The day after a patient had passed away, the charge nurse was notified that there were family members who wished to view the patient’s body. Even though Alissa did not care for the patient herself, she volunteered to assist the family with the viewing in the morgue. Alissa put aside her own work for over an hour so she could assist this family. While preparing the body for viewing, Alissa went above and beyond, bathing and cleaning the patient to make her presentable for the family, then stayed with the family for their entire visit, offering emotional support.
In addition to this instance, Alissa also developed and implemented a new procedure in the MICU to assist family members who have loved ones that are passing away. Alissa put together a CD with quiet, soothing music to be played in the room and coordinated with management to provide families with coffee and snacks while they are on the unit during this difficult time.
Alissa is consistently striving to deliver exceptional care to all patients and families in the MICU. She is a great example of what all nurses should strive to become.
