When I came into the ER, Shay (Sharon) was so kind, comforting and knowledgeable. My husband drove me on icy road conditions because my PICC line was not functioning properly. We were, of course, anxious upon our arrival due to the icy roads and the fact that the PICC line wasn't working properly. She listened carefully and took charge with compassion. When she told me that she had a lot of PICC line experience from a previous job, I immediately relaxed. I knew I was in good hands. What a huge relief since my husband and I were concerned that we might have to wait for a "PICC line person". With the icy and deteriorating road conditions, coupled with a long drive back to our home, we were concerned about the length of our visit. To have someone on staff like Shay with the knowledge and kindness was truly a relief. Within a few minutes of inspecting my PICC line, she was able to clear it. She had to try a variety of different things but was determined and comforting throughout the entire process.
Before letting us go, Shay took her nursing skills one step further. She took the time to teach my husband how to clear an occlusion should it happen again and patiently let him practice. She knew we did not live close and that the roads were icy plus it was not the first time my PICC line had become occluded. What a treasure to find an ER nurse like Shay Cummins!
