I am a brain-injured veteran and it is my honor to recognize Nurse Denise Miller. My life changed forever this year because of Denise. What started as a Glucometer Tutorial, resulted in my hospitalization at the VA for four days. Denise had me do a glucose sample reading. The reading registered in the high 400s. I repeated the test; the results had not changed. Denise suggested that I go to the VA's Emergency. However, I tried to delay this visit because, in two and a half hours I was due to arrive at my mother's, to begin my caregiver shift.
For several minutes, Denise shared with me, vital information which showed me why sooner is better than later. Denise continued by asking me, "how could I take care of my mother if I was sick?" I called my brother and, he agreed to cover my shift, while I went to the Emergency room at the VA. Denise assisted me in finding the Emergency Room and consulted with the Emergency Room Staff, on my behalf. I was admitted later that evening, and my brother took care of our mother for the next three days.
In addition to my Diabetes, I also had treatment for a cellulitis nose infection. The VA also made arrangements for a PCC line and follow-up care. Denise checked with me following my hospitalization. I had nose surgery in April which cleared the Cellulitis. I have had follow-up care with Endocrinology, Infectious Disease, and a Dietician. My blood sugar readings are lower now and, I am feeling better.
Who knows where I would be if Denise had not gone the extra mile and arrived to help me.
