My dad was admitted to CVCC for 5 nights following an angiogram to wait to have open heart surgery. This news was very shocking and unexpected for us. My dad had the absolute best nurses while in CVCC who spent extra time talking to him when he didn't have visitors and making sure he had anything he needed. I met Ashley on the first night of my dad's stay and was there when he was telling her and another nurse about his previous hospital stay. He was telling them about the cookies that used to be at The New Moon Cafe downstairs and how someone got some for him when he didn't have an appetite to eat anything else. Even though it was such an insignificant story, on my dad's last night in CVCC before surgery, Ashley came back to work and brought my dad cookies from New Moon. The fact that she remembered something so small to most people, but so important to him, made a huge impression on him and me. He would also tell me in the mornings about how Ashley would stay in his room when she wasn't busy and talk with him about his "grand dogs" and let him show her pictures of them. My dad kept talking about how she made sure he had everything he needed to get a good night sleep despite being away from home and worried about surgery. The morning he was taken to surgery she was there to see him off and promised to come to check on him. She kept her promise and came to CVPACU that night when she returned to work to see my dad and let him know she was thinking of him. He had also left a picture in his CVCC room and she found it so she brought it to the ICU and taped it up for him. I am a nurse myself in another area in the hospital, and I know how hard it can be to spend time with patients and make them feel special when you have so much to do and other patients to see. I'm am an only child and have a hard time staying with my dad 24/7 in the hospital but get so worried to leave him when I don't know his caretakers. Leaving him in CVCC, especially when Ashley was his nurse, gave me a huge feeling of relief and I truly felt like I could trust his nurses to give him the best care ever. I could never find a way to let Ashley know how much her care meant to us and how wonderful she is. She is a true DAISY Nurse.
