“I participated in a procedure last week on a patient who demonstrated paranoid behavior which lead to her having surgery. It could have been due to post partum depression. She had convinced herself that she had melanoma and was dying. She had not held her newborn infant in over a week because she didn’t want him to get “too attached” to her. She awoke from surgery to a totally negative pathology reports. Her social problems were complicated by the father of the child being a threat, leading her to get two restraining orders. A two hour crying episode ensued. Stacy cared for the patient in PACU and she was very kind, understanding and patient with her. She arranged for a consultation with mental health provider while she was still in recovery. I find it very difficult, as a nurse, to be therapeutic with patients who have emotional problems. I was so very impressed with her compassion and effectiveness with this patient that I felt she deserves recognition for going “above and beyond” to help this patient feel safe; And for establishing a relationship for her with an appropriate care provider! Her primary responsibility would be to establish stability of her vital signs. Stacy looked at the whole patient and was very effective in helping her. I have great respect & admiration for that. ”
