My 91-year-old father-in-law was recently admitted through the ED with Influenza A and Pneumonia in very poor condition. We are a large, close family and we all rally around when "Mr. K" is ill. During this hospital stay, we received some very sad news regarding his prognosis and he was moved to the Pavilion area of the hospital for Palliative Care. We had several days with a lot of watching and waiting. Mr. K's 6 grown children, spouses, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren had been in and out of his room for days.
A nurse, Jackie Koch, took care of my father-in-law several days. While he had an assigned nurse, Jackie could see we were a lot to manage. She opened up a conference room down from Mr. K's room for us to gather and wait rather than over-crowding his room or lingering in the hallway. Jackie took the time to bring in extra cots for those that stayed during the night, she made sure we all had much-needed coffee/juice/water, and snacks throughout the day and evening. She took extra time explaining medication and dosage for Palliative Care and the need to keep him as comfortable as possible. She was great to all of us when I know at times we 'over asked' on the questions and we took up a lot of her time. Jackie never made us feel rushed with questions and took all the time required to make sure we understood everything. She was always calm, compassionate and patient with all of us even when our group got a little noisy at times.
I work in a hospital in Kansas City and participate when our nurses receive The DAISY Awards, I know how important The DAISY Award is and what it means for the nurse to be nominated. It is so important for nurse leaders to display exceptional behavior. Watching Jackie care for my father-in-law, I have no doubt why she is a charge nurse on the unit, she is a mentor and leader for others in her field. My family appreciated the way she cared for Mr. K and his entire family at a very difficult time and helped us through the sad situation. Kudos to Jackie, she is an amazing nurse! You are fortunate to have her as part of your organization.
