Debbie is an integral member of our team as one of our Pediatric Oncology nurses. She always goes above and beyond the call to ensure that our little patients feel safe, have fun, and be comfortable, as they go through their difficult journey in fighting their cancer. Her smile is contagious, and her heart is generous, giving, and loving beyond what words can describe.
One of our patients was on a school trip to New York City when she had a relapse of her cancer. She was told to return immediately for evaluation and therapy. She could not finish her trip, and she missed her chance to see the Broadway show Wicked, which she had looked forward to seeing.
When Debbie heard about this story, she began a personal mission to make this dream a reality for our patient. On her own time, she organized a trip for our patient and her mother to travel to another state, so she can see the show! She raised funds through her family and friends, she booked the hotel and airline tickets, and she bought the tickets to the show. She was inspired by the experience and now expresses an interest in starting a new non-profit organization one day named after this patient, so she can make other dreams come true for children with cancer.
Debbie is also unique, as she also celebrates and remembers the lives of those patients whom we have lost. On her own time, Debbie maintains an album for us, with pictures and stories of our little warriors whom we have lost. It is important to her that we don't forget these little angels. I believe this again is a testament to Debbie's beautiful heart and soul.
Debbie is retiring this year after nearly four decades of work in Pediatrics. Those of us who know her know that she is a true friend, an amazing mother, and a perfect grandmother! In thinking about celebrating her dedication and commitment to Kaiser and the honorable field of nursing, we thought it is only fitting for us to give her the DAISY Award. Kaiser Downey is losing a true treasure.
