I was working with an extremely premature baby, only a few days old. As professionals, we are able to recognize when a little one is beyond medicine's capabilities. That is when we shift our energies to the more challenging and compassionate role of assisting the family during a difficult time. That day, Melanie was the epitome of quiet comfort, a gentle voice, and kind instincts that only come from within, from a person who was born to the role of a nurse.
I needed all team members on the same page to assist the family through this very sad and difficult day. When I entered the room with Melanie, I knew I had the right person to help. She gave the family privacy, but still managed to be quietly close for assistance. She wrapped her arms around an upset mother, whispering words of encouragement to give strength. She helped to place the baby on mom's chest for some quality kangaroo time. Melanie stayed right there. She gave that family all of herself; pouring her compassion, motherly experiences, and professionalism into that experience. She made sure that comfort measures were provided. Her compassion, time, and patience made a difference.

Melanie is an integral part of our NICU team. She is an invaluable resource to other staff members, with her knowledge and expertise of the most critically ill infants. Melanie is an active member of our STORK team, an interdisciplinary team that stabilizes high risk infants and brings them to the NICU for expert treatment. We are so proud of Melanie for being the recipient of this prestigious award. She exemplifies DAISY's core elements: compassion, excellence in clinical care, advocacy for her tiny patients, and she is a vital part of our NICU team.
Thank you, Melanie, for the compassionate care you provide our patients.
