Recently, a patient called over the call bell. She was found to be in severe respiratory distress. We initially tried calling a Condition C, but there was a problem with the new phone system. The first call just rang and rang with no answer. The second call went to Norcom after three rings and a nurse was put on hold. At this point, the nurse called the supervisor Angela Rudisill and expressed that we needed a condition called and the phones were not working. Angela was there within seconds and jumped right in to help. We had a nonrebreather, the ZOLL connected, and were attempting to obtain vitals on the patient already. Angela used her experience as an ICU nurse to immediately assess what was needed in this situation. She started bagging the patient and requested we set up suction. We got the bed out from the wall and the code team got there. Angela continued to help with the condition, even with the ICU nurses at the bedside. The patient had to be intubated and was transferred to the ICU. Angela even helped me bring the bed back after the patient was transferred. I was very grateful to have the quick thinking of Angela in this situation.
