After the experience, the patient informed his care provider, “It was the best day of his life.”
Staff nurses normally don't plan Milwaukee Brewer games for patients or spend 16 hours with them and their family; however, to provide her patients excellent care, Nicole Hanson, Home Health and Hospice, did just that, earning her a DAISY Award.
According to her nomination form, Nicole spent 16 hours with a patient and a family one weekend during their moments of panic and crisis, handling it with ease and care.
Exceeding expectations even further, Nicole honored another hospice patient with his "last wish," which was to see a Milwaukee Brewers game with his grandsons, working with the social worker and the Milwaukee Brewers to coordinate his trip. After the experience, the patient informed his care provider, "It was the best day of his life."
"All of us have gone above and beyond for our patients. As nurses, it's what we do for people," says Nicole. "The extra things we do can have the largest impact."
Upon receiving the award, Nicole says she felt a little guilty, as she feels her whole department goes above what's expected and provides care and support for families clinically, emotionally and spiritually.
"Our whole department needs to be recognized, because we have such an amazing team," says Nicole. "Everyone deserves this recognition for the excellent care we all provide."
