Steve is a nurse who is consistently recognized by patients, families, colleagues, and doctors for the excellent care he provides. On PCU, we had a patient post embolic stroke. This gentleman was left without his sight and considerably impulsive, but unaware of his physical limitations. The patient and family were appreciative of all staff caring for him, especially Steve because the patient was able to recognize Steve by hearing his voice, Steve needed no introduction. This gentleman was discharged from PCU to a rehab facility and was readmitted a few weeks later to PCU for sepsis. Steve was the patient's re-admitting nurse. The patient was admitted late in Steve's shift and was very ill. The patient needed a CT scan but was unable to lay flat and experienced respiratory difficulty. Steve again was a calming reassurance to the patient and stayed after his shift and ended up accompanying the patient to CT scan. Additionally, when the patient's wife arrived she gave Steve a huge hug and said, "I am so thankful you are his nurse!" Steve stayed well after his shift and accompanied the patient to ICU. Steve would say this is just a regular day, but this is just one example of the consistent above and beyond care he provides to patients.
