Patty Higginbotham actually received 7 nominations to become our first Daisy recipient in October 2009.
I have had many experiences with her over the past year. She is a very knowledgeable and proficient nurse. She puts the patient and staff at ease when she arrives to the floor and takes over a situation. She always lets the staff nurse know what she is doing and why and she finds opportunities to teach me and thoroughly explains what is happening to the patient. She is always prompt when paged and always approachable even if it’s just to ask a question. When she is here I feel more at ease knowing I can count on her. She is also a strong patient advocate to the Doctors.
When she is working and you have a problem she is not afraid to jump in and help in any way. I had a confused combative patient and she came and helped the staff. The patient was hitting and kicking staff, she was not afraid to jump right in and help.
She responded to a call of mine while she was making her rounds. She knew exactly what to do (she is very knowledgeable), listening to the family, to me, and the patient who had been growing increasingly “worse” over the evening with respiratory difficulty. She was so calm when answering the family and patient’s questions and calming their fears. She was able to very quietly transfer the patient to the critical care unit and quick to coordinate, inform and help the patient upon arrival to the unit when intubation was eminent. She is a very caring and skilled nurse; there have been so many instances where she has shown her wonderful nursing qualities. She is the Daisy of CCMH!!
She is very caring and knowledgeable. She is always pleasant and listens to what you have to say. I am always glad to see that she is working when I come in because I know that she will help out no matter how big or small. She responds immediately when called. She is a great asset to the night shift.
She is always willing to help others and is always there for advice or to offer an opinion about a patient situation. I know if I have a patient going bad or need help with a patient I can cal and she will do all she can to help me. She never acts like we are bothering her if staff calls her for help.
She responds to call immediately. She demonstrates knowledge about nursing and is considerate to nursing, patient, and family. She is always willing to help out even if it is not a call for her. She is friendly and caring. She is a big benefit to night shift.
Every time we need help with a patient on 5N we can always count on her to be a patient advocate when talking to their Doctor. If she feels the patient is not fit to be on 5N and needs to be on ACU or telemetry she makes sure they are transferred so they can be taken care of properly.
