Mike is a valuable co-worker. He often goes above and beyond for his patients and their families. Recently, Mike was taking care of an elderly patient who was at the end of her life. Placed on a morphine drip to transition to death in comfort, Mike did the best he could to keep her at ease. Her family members were also elderly with limited means of transportation, so naturally, they were distraught about not being able to be at her bedside. Their worry was that she would feel alone when she died. This is where Mike shined. He put their fears to rest as he accommodated every phone call from multiple family members to be placed personally to him and he then relayed it to speakerphone next to the patient. She heard their goodbyes and was calmed by soothing and relaxing videos, a warm blanket and a smiling face every time Mike entered the room. At the end of the shift, when the patient stopped breathing, lost a blood pressure and had a low heart rate on the cardiac monitor, another nurse and I went to check on her and hold her hand. But Mike was already there. I believe it takes a special kind of person to be a MICU nurse, expert care across the continuum of saving a life to simply helping someone let go. Thank you, Mike, for making a difference.
