When Katina Lacey, Emergency Department, heard about a patient who was at the very end of his life, she left her own department and went to pray with him, earning herself a DAISY Award. As the patient took his last breaths, the family asked for support from a chaplain or pastor, as it often is difficult to obtain these services in a rural setting. That's when Katina offered to go and pray with the family. She had never met this family before, but she gathered courage and offered prayers of thanksgiving and comfort in passing.
It wasn't easy for Katina. However, she used her talents to care for the immediate needs of this family, and lead them toward acceptance and peace.
"People often have spiritual needs that need to be met along with physical needs," Katina said. "To be able to offer that comfort was an honor. That's why I went into nursing."
