Lorenzo serves as a strong role model to all the staff either giving advice on the care of a patient or being a source of knowledge that we all have learned to lean on. As a supervisor he offers kind words of encouragement during hard times on the floor and works hard to see the staff succeed. During a code situation his calm demeanor keeps a chaotic situation running smoothly and helps staff stay focused. Because of this, many code situations have been successful in returning the patient to baseline.
Our patient population can have terminal outcomes and families' emotions run high; Lorenzo is always able to bring comfort to these patients and family members. So much so that on many occasions I've been told by patients that they felt they were where they needed to be to get better because they felt the staff was strong under Lorenzo's lead.
Once there was a code on another floor that one of our nurses was floated to, Lorenzo was one of the first to respond and that RN told me that it wasn't until she saw him that she felt capable of running the code. His presence gave her the confidence to do what she needed to do to take care of the patient. I personally feel that because of what I have learned from him I am a stronger nurse.
