Nick represents nursing at its best. He watches out for patients, peers, and physicians. He is a joy to work with and a trusted member of our inpatient team. Nick Stone recently served a night shift Charge RN. Nick was involved in making sure one of our patients, with increasing Troponin levels, was transferred quickly and efficiently to MCSA. Nick worked with the physician to make sure the transfer was seamless; as a result, this patient was able to have a cardiac intervention for a 100% RCA blockage. According to one of his peers, "Nick handled everything with class as he talked to multiple doctors continuing great patient care."
Nick also was very helpful with the recent insulin conversion competency check-offs. A Clinical Educator shared with him, "Without all of your help, I never would have been able to check-off all the RNs on the inpatient unit in such a short time frame!!!"
Nick was also recognized by an MST working with him. She stated, "Thanks for always being a great nurse and going above and beyond to help out!" Nick serves on our Unit Based Council where he provides a strong leadership presence for the night shift. Nick collaborates frequently with our physician colleagues - a recent example was working with both our Gen Med physicians and a surgeon to assist in pain management ordering; he also worked with our VPMA to provide input that would provide structure to this pain medication ordering process.
Nick is able to handle difficult patients using his great communication skills; recently a patient was expressing great concern about her home care arrangements and was having difficulty making decisions; the patient's husband was in an ICU at another hospital which further compounded her anxiety. Nick spent a great deal of time with her, allowing her to discuss options, weigh the pros and cons, and express her concerns. As a result, the patient was able to make a decision that she was comfortable with - multiple staff members had attempted to assist this patient with making this decision and all had been unsuccessful. Nick's ability to stop and listen made all the difference.
