Eric is a very compassionate and caring nurse who knew as a young man that he wanted to be in the medical field. Eric was attending medical school in his country of Togo when his teenage daughter told him she wanted to become a doctor. Eric sacrificed his own career to put his daughter through medical school instead. He wanted to remain in the healthcare field so he went to nursing school.
Eric cared for a patient that was admitted to the hospital with a heart attack and had recently taken up drinking due to the loss of his son. He and the patient's wife were both very scared and worried that the patient would die. He was told he needed to have open heart surgery and this made them very nervous, Eric took the time to sit and talk with them. He eased their fears with his caring nature and words of encouragement. He assured them that they were in the best hands possible for cardiac care, from the nurses to the cardiovascular surgeons. He listened to all their concerns with empathy and answered all their questions in a caring and compassionate manner. He rounded on them frequently and even found a recliner for his daughter to be comfortable when she wanted to spend the night with her father.
The following day, the patient went for surgery and was then transferred to our post open-heart unit. The wife came down to the 8th floor seeking out our manager because she wanted to share her story about how strongly they feel that Eric saved her husband's life. She came to see Eric, to give him a hug, and to thank him personally. Eric visited the patient to wish him well in his recovery. Eric also advised him on his drinking and the negative effects it could have on his recovery.
This is just one of many stories of this wonderful nurse who exemplifies compassion. He was recently nominated for the hospital MVP for his helpful nature with his co-workers. Whenever there is any emergency situation, he is there to offer his assistance. He is a resource for the new staff; he is soft spoken, approachable, and patient with them. When other nurses are unable to get an IV in their patients, Eric volunteers to do it for them and is successful every time. One day he did 5 IV's for different nurses while caring for his own 5 patients, and he did it willingly and with a smile on his face.
