John navigates the most difficult patient situations with amazing gentleness and grace. He is often the one to deal with patients who are delirious and/or violent. While being firm and focused he is extremely sensitive to the needs of those around him, including his fellow staff and especially his patients. Safety is what he's good at; preemptively but politely, approaching his fellow staff to avoid dangerous situations. Even when a patient is particularly difficult, he is able to bounce back to a good-natured attitude very quickly, helping our work environment and improving patient experiences. John demonstrates exceptional caring and gentleness for even the most violent patients, who are often unable to remember their behavior. When John is at work, I know it's going to be a good night. I know I can approach him for help or questions and he makes the ED feel safe.

John is not only a wonderful person to work with, but he is also an incredibly inspiring, encouraging colleague. Working as a charge nurse in the Emergency Department, he faces challenging situations every shift and remains professional and positive. In situations, where I myself may feel overwhelmed or impatient, John remains empathetic, level-headed and always puts the patients' safety and well-being first. Whether he is comforting a patient, offering guidance to a fellow employee, or taking charge of a hectic situation, John is a lighthouse. He is truly an invaluable resource to his co-workers and an advocate for his patients. Three cheers to John! He deserves the DAISY Award!"

My friend was admitted to the ED for a stroke last month and she was afraid, confused and vulnerable. Nurse John settled her in. He was compassionate, gentle and reassuring. He maintained eye contact with her, gently touched her hand when she was distressed and answered all of her questions in words that she could understand even when she asked the same questions over and over. I couldn't believe how patient he was! He frequently checked in on us to make sure she was okay and made sure the tech and others were attending to us, as well. The ED is a hectic place, but John made us feel as if we were the only people in the ED and we had his undivided attention. Thank you, John, for your exceptional, compassionate care!
