As we get ready to celebrate my daughter's first birthday, I can finally sit and write a "thank you" letter to all our angels. Everything started an evening at home when I was 22 weeks pregnant. I got up to go the restroom and all I saw was that I was hemorrhaging. I called 911. When the paramedics arrived, I was crying uncontrollably thinking that I had lost my baby girl and I was so scared to look that I told the paramedics that I had flushed the toilet. The paramedics tried to find a heartbeat, but they couldn't. I was so heartbroken and all I could hear on my ride to the Hospital was the paramedic saying to me "It's okay, you are young and you can have more children" - and I also heard the other paramedic giving a report to the Emergency Room staff; "there's no heartbeat and the patient flushed the toilet." When I heard that, my heart sank; my heart came out of my chest. So many years trying to get pregnant; how did I lose my baby this way? The paramedics brought me up to Labor and Delivery and I remember the first person I saw there was Jaclyn and she knew I was heartbroken. I remember she gave me a hug without knowing me, and I said: "It's okay". Jaclyn looked straight into my eyes and said: "no, it's not okay". I had refused an ultrasound because the paramedics had already told me that I lost my baby, but when Jaclyn said "It's not okay", I felt so safe and I allowed them to perform the ultrasound. When I heard a heartbeat, it was the most beautiful sound ever! I came back to life! I was told I needed to stay for quite some time, which ended up being two months. Over that time, Jaclyn cared for me often. One day Jaclyn was extremely busy but had promised to wheel me out in the hallway for a couple of minutes, and at the end of her shift, she came and did just that. Until this day, I don't even think she knows how much that one gesture meant to me. As the first nurse that cared for me, all of the kindness, reassurance, and care she provided to me was beyond exceptional. While I will always remember her, I'm sure I will never be able to thank her enough.
