I felt helpless, embarrassed, weak and terrified; I wanted to be invisible as I entered the clinic. After I was checked in the first person I saw was Kathy. She never treated me as if I was helpless or weak. She made sure I was safe when I entered the room to gain my vitals, weight, etc., but she also made me feel completely at ease. She did not treat me as if something was wrong with me but took my symptoms seriously. Her calming demeanor greatly helped me to improve. I was able to look up, and even look into her eyes after I could not even with my own family. While this interaction may have appeared to be brief in my state of crisis, it stuck with me and I hope my patients feel the same as she made me feel.
