My grandson was born at Children's Mercy with a birth defect and had several things wrong with him. He has been in the NICU since his birth which was two months ago. One of the things wrong is that he doesn't have an esophagus. We have to wait until he grows so he can have corrective surgery. Susan has been one of my grandson's nurses since he was born. She takes such good care of him and is so conscientious and knowledgeable. You can tell by watching her work that she loves her job. My grandson has "spells" where his oxygen level can drop very rapidly within seconds. It is such a comfort to know Susan is caring for him and to know if there are any issues at all, she is going to do everything she can to help him.
My favorite times are Saturday nights when we go down to Children's Mercy to see him and get to hold him with Susan right there. This may not seem like much to most people, but to me it's huge. As his grandma, I long to hold him and I am not medically trained so you have to imagine it's a little scary when he has a spell, but I know Susan is right there should something happen and he need help ASAP.
This last Saturday evening, Susan had him all bathed and ready for me to hold him when I arrived. He smelled awesome, and I was able to hold him for 45 minutes. I smelled the palms of my hands all the way home because they smelled like him. My grandson probably won't come home from the hospital until he is 6-months-old so it's the little things that really count. It would be impossible for me to describe how much better I sleep when I know Susan is there watching him all night. It is a huge comfort to me and as stressed as we all are good sleep is very important. I am not getting to enjoy my grandson at home like most people do, but Susan is going out of her way to make sure I get to enjoy him as much and as normal as possible. Thank you Susan!
