Our mother, 99 years of age, experienced a 15 day stay VRH. During her stay, it was our great pleasure to meet Elaine, who, many years ago, was hired by our mother who was then the Operating Room Supervisor! According to Elaine, our mother felt that she would make a wonderful nurse, and encouraged her to pursue a nursing career. The meeting of the two after all of these years was special for our mother and for us. Elaine had a way with Mom that no other nurse had. During team meetings, she kept in mind the woman our mother is as she gently but firmly explained Mom's condition and what the team and my sister and I agreed as imperative for her care going forward despite, at times, our mother's resistance and lack of understanding due to her cognitive impairment. Elaine's patience with mom was extraordinary, her respect for our mother was apparent! We felt heard, we felt understood. During the times my sister and I were not able to be present at the hospital; our mother would ring for a nurse every few minutes - enough to make anyone crazy! Knowing this, Elaine specifically asked to include our mother in her patient load one day upon seeing that she wasn't assigned to her. She asked to be our mother's nurse! To her family and the families of others who will experience her as their nurse, this is simply a precious gift given to a patient - in this case, our mother. Our mother, at 99, is on borrowed time. Elaine's presence in her life at this time in the same hospital at which they first met happened for a reason. Beginnings and endings.
