Robin McConnell is an extraordinary nurse and mentor. She has so much knowledge to contribute to the emergency department and goes above and beyond to make sure that each patient is provided the best possible care. The first day of my preceptorship she made me feel welcome and took the time to orient me to the department. She had me shadow her to get a feel for the job and gradually gave me more responsibilities as the preceptorship went on. I really appreciated this because the emergency department is such a fast paced department. It made me feel like she was dedicated to my learning experience and wanted to see me to succeed. Her genuinely, caring demeanor amazed me.
The first patient we went to assess, Robin was so gentle and explained everything in detail, like why the patient needed an IV, what diagnostic tests were going to be completed and the estimated amount of time of how long it would take to get the results. She continued this approach throughout the entire shift. I could tell the patients trusted her and felt like they were in good hands.
Robin's discharge teaching is phenomenal. Before she enters the room she makes sure she has a full understanding of the discharge plan, and then she will take the time to sit down with the patient and go over everything in detail, verify that they understand, and makes sure the plan is feasible for them to carry out once they leave the hospital. Robin promotes the nursing profession by having substantial clinical judgment, leadership skills, and an enthusiastic approach. I hope that one day I will be viewed by my patients and coworkers the same way Robin is viewed by hers.
