Olivia is a nurse from the Medical Unit and transferred to the Emergency Room. We recently had a particularly complex patient on the Neurology service who needed education in preparation for discharge to home. I asked Olivia for help with this and while she had never done the teaching before, she did not shy away from my request, rather, she said "I have never done that but I am sure I can figure it out". We collaborated in putting together the information for the family and she was able to provide the education to the family.
This is not a unique scenario with Olivia. I am always grateful when she has one of our Neurology patients as she asks great questions and does not shy away from difficult situations. To me, she demonstrates the inquisitive and innovative nature that I believe will help her continue to be successful as a nurse and to meet the challenging needs of her patients as well as demonstrate our hospital values.
