When I received the Vocera message that a patient wanted to meet with me I put my business card in my pocket thinking it would be a complaint. This can be a reason a patient or family requests the manager to come to their room. The patient was waiting for his transfer to the OR for an acute issue.
He said he "just wanted to make sure" someone knew what an impact Shelby Franco had on him. He stated, "I was so afraid" "this was so hard" "I felt like giving up, and then she came in and helped me". Her compassion and empathy made a difference in this patient's life. She kept him fully informed, she took time to sit with him asking him what his fears were and addressing each one. The patient remarked how Shelby took the time to REALLY listen and hear what he was worried about. He remarked how "this was the best hospital experience he has ever had and frankly he could ever have."
Shelby is the epitome of a professional nurse. She is highly engaged and committed to not only her professional practice but to the department's function and practice. Since she returned to the Pedi ED she has organized creative dress days, the staff introduction board, delivered staff education on near-drowning, antibiotic use sheets, trach information sheet, steroid use sheets, and more. She is an exemplary charge and triage nurse.
Shelby has a bright future ahead of her and I am not surprised that this patient would want to recognize her. She clearly loves what she does and she represents the "art" of nursing.
The patient also filled out a DAISY Award Nomination after speaking with the manager:
"From the first day we met, she was so nice to me, took care of my every need. She made me comfortable when I gave up. Best experience I ever had in a hospital!!!!"
