I am new here at Jupiter Medical Center and was shadowing nurses to learn and observe care. When I approached Jessica and introduced myself, she was happy and welcoming, eager to start her day. She stated, "I don't know why you are with me; I am only a year and a half nurse. So many others could show you better."
What struck me as I followed Jessica and was witness to her interpersonal skills, was her ability to apply knowledge to meet each patient's needs. I also observed her ability to ask for help from her charge for a second opinion. Her action to coordinate and provide the best care for one of her patients did not go unnoticed. The patient's daughter noticed and was grateful. Then to make matters better, Jessica included the daughter in the care of the patient (Mom). The charge thanked Jessica for making sure all was well. I saw Jessica make connections with patients and demonstrate empathy all while modeling the behaviors of a professional nurse.
Jessica performed tasks based on strong nursing knowledge. By asking for help, she demonstrates a willingness to keep learning. Towards the end of my time with Jessica, I asked her if she had given herself time to reflect on how far she has come as a nurse, her own growth. Jessica said, "No. I have so far to go." I hope Jessica gives herself time to truly understand what a fantastic nurse she already is.
